CHAD BOAT WINS 39TH ANNUAL “BELLEVILLE MIDGET NATIONALS”

Belleville, Kansas August 6, 2016 – Phoenix, Arizona’s Chad Boat joined his father Billy in Belleville High Banks lore, replicating his dad’s 1995 victory by winning Saturday night’s 39th running of the “Belleville Midget Nationals.”

Boat picked up the lead on the lap 14 restart and drove away to his third USAC National Midget feature victory in the last four races, including back-to-back nights at Belleville to cap off the series’ visit to the Heartland.

After dominating victories earlier in the night during his heat race and the pole dash, Boat earned the pole position for Saturday night’s 40-lap finale.

Though Boat had been the driver to beat all weekend, it was Tanner Thorson who had the advantage on the outside, blasting to the lead into turn one.

Boat attempted a slider on Thorson for the lead at the entrance to turn one on lap two, going side-by-side to the inside of Thorson to no avail, allowing Thorson to open up his lead as Boat lost momentum and fell into line in the second position.

On lap six, three-time “Belleville Midget Nationals” winner Bryan Clauson had rose to the forefront, sliding across the nose of Boat for second at the exit of turn four. Boat countered, diving to the inside of Clauson to reclaim the spot as the two sprinted down the front stretch.

Clauson kept tabs on Boat and, on lap 10, was able to capitalize when Boat’s turn one slider attempt on Thorson fell short. With the high-side momentum in his favor, Clauson flat-footed past Boat on the outside of turn two to grab second with the leader, Thorson, now within sight.

On lap 13, Clauson quickly reeled in Thorson as the frontrunners encountered lapped traffic. Clauson and Boat were able to pounce as the two grabbed first and second, respectively, while Thorson fell to third.

One lap later, Clauson was once again on cruise control as he stretched his lead, but as Clauson entered the top of turns three and four, his car and a lapped car made contact, sending Clauson flipping end-over-end on the high side of the track. His car careened down to the middle of the racing surface at the exit of turn four where it was struck by the car of Ryan Greth. Greth walked away uninjured, but Clauson would be transported to a Lincoln, Nebraska hospital due to the incident.

On the restart, Boat checked out from the field and never looked back, warding off a Spencer Bayston rally in the final laps that saw him come within three-car-lengths of Boat with five to go as the duo entered lapped traffic. Boat was able to navigate around the cars of Michelle Decker and Travis Scott to gain all the separation he needed at the end, taking the checkered flag by 1.283 seconds over Bayston, Jerry Coons, Jr., Brady Bacon and Carson Macedo.

Boat became the 12th driver to win the “Belleville Midget Nationals” from the pole in his Tucker-Boat Motorsports/PristineAuction.com – K & C Drywall/Spike/Speedway Toyota, the first to do so since Christopher Bell in 2013. Boat also became the 18th driver to win the feature on both his preliminary night and on “Championship Night” on the same weekend, the first to accomplish the feat since Coons in 2012.

Boat’s victory also came in the second round of the seven-race Jonathan Byrd’s “Indy Challenge,” putting him in position to claim either a seat in the 2017 Freedom 100 Indy Lights race at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway if he can win four of the next five “Byrd Challenge” races. If Boat can attain victories in the next five-straight “Byrd Challenge” events, he would secure a seat for the full schedule of oval races on the 2017 Indy Lights schedule.

“This is hard to describe,” Boat said. “You dream about winning races like Belleville, the Chili Bowl, kind of the ‘Big Five’ in midget racing. To get my first of the ‘Big Five’ tonight is really special. At the beginning of this year, we set out to win races. Until this week, I hadn’t been holding up my end of the deal. To come out of here with three out of four is pretty pleasing. The lapped cars split for me at the right time, but it was a battle because I could push harder, but I knew I needed to save my tires. From that last caution to the end, I was probably only a quarter-throttle to save them.”

Spencer Bayston extended his point lead to 35 markers in the race for the USAC Midget National Championship with his second place finish in his Keith Kunz – Curb-Agajanian Motorsports/TRD – Mobil 1/Bullet/Speedway Toyota.

“This place is tricky, especially when it lays rubber,” Bayston explained. “It’s hammer-down, but there’s a fine line between being aggressive and conserving your equipment. We changed a left rear under the red and that got us to the end. I wanted to push myself to track him down, but if I drove too hard, I’d get out of the rubber. We were right on the edge all night, but Chad got ahead first and we just had to soldier on.”

Three-time “Belleville” winner Jerry Coons, Jr. finished a season-best third in his Rusty Kunz Racing/Competition Suspension, Inc. – Hoosier Tire/Spike/Stanton SR-11, scoring his best finish in a USAC National Midget event since a second-place run at “Little Belleville” in 2013 at Belle-Clair Speedway in Belleville, Illinois.

“I never felt like we had the car where I was comfortable,” Coons said. “We were just a tad loose, but we changed left rears under the red. The car was good after the red, though we were able to pass some cars and get in a position to get to third past Tanner on that last restart. It was just one of those nights where we just missed it a little bit.”

Contingency award winners Saturday night at the Belleville High Banks were Chad Boat (Simpson Race Products First Heat Race winner), Tanner Thorson (Competition Suspension, Inc. (CSI) Second Heat Race winner), Carson Macedo (Benic Enterprises Third Heat Race winner), Spencer Bayston (Indy Race Parts Fourth Heat Race winner), Curtis Spicer (KSE Racing Products Hard Charger) and Garett Hood (Wilwood Brakes 13th Place Finisher).

Rico Abreu the Strongest Man in Ironman 55 Win
Becomes the sixth different event winner and 16th series winner of the season

PEVELY, Mo. – Aug. 6, 2016 – Rico Abreu proved to be the strongest man Saturday night at Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 as he powered forward and battled to the lead scoring his first World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series victory of the season and the Federated Auto Parts Ironman 55 presented by Walker.

Abreu, a NASCAR Truck Series regular, slipped back to fifth early but battled back into the top three after a lap 26 restart. He worked his way around the No. 9 of Daryn Pittman then set his sights on the No. 49 of Brad Sweet. Sweet bobbled coming off of turn four and Abreu raced past him onto the front straight.

Through traffic, the then leader Kerry Madsen lost ground to Abreu and Sweet. On lap 38 Abreu threw a slider on Madsen through turns three and four, but Madsen held. What commenced though was a two-lap, three-way battle for the lead. Abreu eventually got around and through restarts, traffic and a brush with the wall on the final lap, Abreu cruised to the Ironman 55 win.

“It’s really important. These big ones is what it comes down to. All that hard work all year that these guys have done,” Abreu said. “I raced my ass off. It’s fun, it all pays off.”

Abreu is the 16th different winner of the season and the sixth different driver to score the Ironman 55 title. Since 2009, Craig Dollansky is the only driver to repeat.

Sweet kicked off the night with his second straight quick time award in qualifying. His 11th quick time made him the season’s leading qualifier, surpassing Joey Saldana who held the distinction through much of the year.

Madsen, the 2014 Ironman 55 winner, started on the feature pole with with 2015’s Ironman winner, Shane Stewart, on his outside.

When the green flag fell, Sweet, who started fourth, battled forward, taking over third on the initial start and then racing Stewart, side-by-side on lap 10 for second. Two laps later, as Madsen worked his way through traffic, Sweet closed the gap on the leader and began challenging him for the lead.

A caution flew and on the restart Madsen pulled away, this time maintaining his top spot through the traffic. When the next caution flag fell on lap 26, Madsen had lapped up to 16th position.

Abreu, who had been sitting in fourth through much of the feature, got his chance on the restart, as he took over third from Pittman and then took advantage of Sweet’s mistake on the exit of four to take over second.

On lap 39, again slowed by traffic, Abreu caught Madsen and slid him through turns three and four. It was not enough that lap, but setup a three-way battle for position with Sweet mixing it up, nearly side-by-side-by-side across the line on lap 40. Abreu displayed masterful maneuvering across the track as he took over the lead and, in spite of the strong challenge from Madsen and near disaster at the end, crossed the finish line in first.

To chants of, “Rico, Rico, Rico,” from a packed Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55, Abreu hoisted the coveted dumbbell trophy and claimed the $20,000 prize.

“We started off pretty tight in the beginning of the race. The tighter our car is, it tends to bog our engine which makes it confusing to know what to do,” Abreu said. “I was just trying to maintain my tires underneath me. When I got to those guys I made sure I didn’t race them too hard. You can get in an intense battle and heat your tires up and end up running fifth or sixth. I just made sure I hit my marks. The restarts were really important tonight.”

Abreu ended the two-year run of Kings Royal winners also taking the Ironman victory. The win is his fourth career series win.

Madsen, who looked to become just the second repeat winner of the Ironman 55, led the first 40 laps of the grueling 55-lap feature. In the end though, Abreu had the edge.

“The guys gave me a fantastic racecar. Just got into traffic there and I just – guy had been running the top and I thought I had him and then he chopped the front and Rico was there to take advantage. This race is always one of our favorites of the year – the fan interaction is fantastic.”

Stewart battled past Sweet through the closing laps and took home the final spot on the night’s podium. He said the podium finish was needed for his Larson Marks crew as their performance has not been where they want it to be.

“We’ve been on struggle street really badly lately,” Stewart said. “It was a really great race. Normally you try to pace yourself a little but there was no pacing. This is a great event, it’s a special race to win. Hats off to Rico, he does a great job.”

“Hopefully we can carry this momentum, not only into Knoxville, but into the rest of the season.”

Joey Saldana was the KSE Racing Hard Charger, advancing nine positions to finish fifth.

NEW FACES IN VICTORY LANE AT SPIRIT AUTO CENTER SPEEDWAY

On a night with a full schedule of action, two drivers won for the first time this season while two other drivers scored their second win of the season. Matt Smith scored the victory in the wingless 600cc Micro Sprint feature while Colin Bustard scored his first win of the season in the 270cc Micro Sprint feature. The 2015 ServPro Four Cylinder champion, Chris Sammons won for the second time this season. Mike Haggenbottom, the consecutive four-time champion of the TSRS 305 Sprints won his second Friday night feature on the 5/8th mile.

In the Hilborn TSRS 305 Sprint feature, Haggenbottom started seventh after a three pill was drawn for the invert. Randy Wilbert and Ryan Stillwaggon battled for the lead on the opening lap with Wilbert gaining the advantage by the end of the first lap. Wilbert began to pull away from the rest of the field but by lap five Stillwaggon began to close the gap. Jeff Geiges slowed and pulled onto the 1/4 mile to bring out the first caution on lap eight. On the restart, Stillwaggon overtook Wilbert for the lead. The racing action was halted on the twelfth lap for a duel flip in the first turn by John Burnett and Zack Burd. Both drivers were uninjured. When racing resumed, Stillwaggon led Haggenbottom and Wilbert back to the green flap. Haggenbottom dogged Stillwaggon until moving to the high groove to complete the pass for the lead on lap 14. Haggenbottom recorded his second Friday night win. Kyle Purks finished second with Rick Stief gaining third on the last lap. Stillwaggon faded to fourth in the closing laps with Tim Tanner, Jr. finishing fifth.

Smith led the entire distance to record his first win of the season and second of his career at Spirit Auto Center Speedway. Nick Havens and Rich Mellor traded second back and forth until Mellor took the position for good at the thirteenth lap. Jermain Godshall took third from Haven with one lap remaining with Havens finishing fourth. Bill Thomas took fifth with one lap remaining to finish fifth.

Luke Fogg led the opening laps of the 270cc Micro Sprint feature until Lee Reinhardt took command on lap six. Reinhardt continued to lead as Bustard steadily moved from his sixth starting position to the runner-up spot. On a restart on lap 11, Reinhardt restarted the race but quickly slowed and headed to the pits. Bustard inherited the lead and then held off current point leader, Tyler Reinhardt for the win. Joe Bednarek, Ryan Wozunk and Fogg completed the top five.

Rick Burnham, making his first start of the season in the ServPro Four Cylinders, led the opening lap of the feature. Sammons passed Burnham for the lead on lap two and began to pull away from the field. Current point leader, John Webster moved into second on the fifth lap and chased Sammons for the rest of the event. At the checkered Sammons recorded his second win of the season followed by Webster, Joe Garey, Burnham and Todd Francis.

New Egypt Speedway Will Honor Bryan Clauson During Saturday, August 13th Event
Fans Wearing Clauson T-shirts Will Help Donate $6.30 to USAC Benevolent Fund

New Egypt, NJ —– The dirt racing community was shocked at the passing of one of its most likable and recognizable names when USAC driver Bryan Clauson succumbed to injuries he sustained while leading the Belleville Midget National event on Saturday, August 6th. Clauson was a fan favorite and USAC feature winner at New Jersey’s New Egypt Speedway and during their event on Saturday, August 13th the Speedway will celebrate Clauson’s legacy.

The Speedway is asking its fans who attend to wear green and black, the colors of most of Clauson’s rides during his “Chasing 200” tour of 2016, and in addition anyone who wears a Bryan Clauson t-shirt to the race, the Speedway along with General Manager Allyse Wolfinger will donate $6.30 to the USAC Benevolent Fund, the designated charity of the Clauson family to accept donations in Bryan’s name. The Speedway will also be selling pins, paper fans, and stickers with all proceeds also being donated to the USAC Benevolent Fund. There will also be a moment of silence prior to the start of racing.

“Bryan Clauson was a fierce competitor, a fan favorite, but more importantly an amazing person who always had time to talk to everyone waiting to meet him. We would like to honor the driver, champion, and person Bryan was by helping others the way his family has requested. Saturday night will be a celebration of a driver who gave so much to our sport and its fans in the most respectful way we can,” said New Egypt Speedway General Manager Allyse Wolfinger.

Clauson was a two time USAC feature winner at New Egypt Speedway once in 2012 on his way to the USAC championship and again in 2014. This past season he fought through the field to finish an impressive third on his way to claiming the 2016 USAC Eastern Storm Championship.

About the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions:
All Star Enterprises, LLC, wholly owned by Tony Stewart, d/b/a the All Star Circuit of Champions, is a winged sprint car series. The All-Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Car Series is one of the oldest traveling 410 sprint car organizations and is a staple of grassroots, open-wheel racing. Formed in 1970 by Bud Miller, the series has largely been considered the first ‘outlaw’ Sprint Car organization of the modern era. After a 10 year stint as owner of the All Stars, Miller passed control of the series to Bert Emick in 1980; a reign that would continue through 2002. Guy Webb then purchased the series from Emick in the summer of 2002 and served as the series President for the next 12 years. Motorsports entrepreneur Tony Stewart agreed to terms with Guy Webb to become the sole owner of the original winged sprint car tour in January of 2015.

About Thunder on the Hill Racing Series
The brainchild of Grandview Speedway owner Bruce Rogers, special events promoter Bob Miller and local driving star Dave Kelly, the Thunder on the Hill Racing Series celebrates 27 years of the most anticipated events of the racing calendar year after year. BRIDGEPORT PRESENTS THE THREE FOR ALL – A RACE FAN’S DREAM EVENT

Three For All

On August 16th, the Bridgeport Speedway will present the second Three for All event on the 5/8th mile speedway – a tripleheader show featuring the Super Late Models, United Racing Club (URC) Sprint Cars and 358 Small Block Modifieds with each division competing in qualifying events and a twenty-five lap feature events. It’s a race fan’s dream – guaranteed to offer something for everyone’s taste in dirt track racing!

The Three for All will be sponsored by BRB Contractors of King of Prussia, PA. BRB Contractors is a family owned and operated business, specializing in demolition, excavation, paving, hauling and site work. Bob Lilick and his four sons – Bobby, Brian, Justin and Kris – are competitors at the Bridgeport Speedway. Kris Lilick has won twice this season in the Stewart Stainless Crate/Sportsman Division and is currently second in the point standings with brother, Bobby in third. The Lilicks and BRB Contractors have been in business for sixteen years.

The inaugural Three for All event saw young Andrew Mullins make full use of a late race caution to erase Glenn Elliot’s advantage as he raced into the lead of Super Late Models as the field headed to the white flag. Curt Michael picked up the win in the URC feature event, earning his fourth win of the 2015 season followed by Robbie Stillwaggon and Josh Weller. Neal Williams earned his first ever Modifed feature win at Bridgeport with a flag to flag victory in the Small Block Modified feature, holding off the challenges of Jimmy Blewett and Ryan Watt.

Glenn Elliot’s second place finish didn’t dampen his enthusiasm for this event. “This is an awesome place,” Elliot exclaimed following the 2015 event. “I would love to come here.” Elliot will have his chance when the gates swing open on the 2016 event.

Echoing Glenn Elliot’s enthusiasm is Ricky Elliot – a former regular competitor in Bridgeport’s Big Block Modified Division. Elliot racked up ten feature wins on the Bridgeport 5/8 mile track during the 2004 season, losing the title by single digit points as he and eventual champion, Duane Howard battled to the final checkered flag for the 2004 title. Elliot made the move into Late Models during the following season. In spite of his success in the Modifieds, Elliot is still looking for his first Super Late Model victory on the Bridgeport clay.

“I thought I was smarter than everyone else,” Elliot said of his strategy in last year’s event. With all of his success and Bridgeport experience, Elliot chose a tire compound that was too hard. He finished fourth. “These cars are about a second and a half faster than the Modifieds (Big Blocks). They are more aero dynamic and a little lighter,” Elliot explained the factors that contributed to his miscalculation. “I’m really looking forward to this event,” Elliot stated. Elliot has been active with the Bridgeport management team, recruiting drivers for the 2016 event.

“Bridgeport has always been one of my favorite tracks,” Elliot related. “The faster you go, the better I like it!”

The inaugural Three for All event was also a red letter race for Neal Williams who picked up his first ever Modified win at the Bridgeport Speedway. Williams is a former Crate/Sportsman Champion at the Bridgeport Speedway with multiple feature wins in that division. It was Williams who gave New Jersey car owner, Sal DeBruno his first Bridgeport Championship while racing in the Crate/Sportsman Division.

DeBruno has fielded cars for many years. The list of drivers who have competed in the Overhead Door of Southern New Jersey No. 0 is like a “Who’s Who” in racing. That list includes drivers like Doug Hoffman, Ricky Elliot, Wade Hendrickson and Richie Pratt to name a few. Williams returned to Bridgeport this season in a second DeBruno owned Big Block Modified No. 0nw, joining rookie, CJ Jones who has won twice in the Overhead Door No. 0 so far this season.

Small Block Modified competition on the 5/8 mile track will find an interesting mix of Bridgeport regulars as well as invaders. Bridgeport Big Block Modified feature winners like Ryan Watt, Rick Laubach, Wade Hendrickson

Curt Michael would like nothing better than to pick up his winning ways when URC returns to the Bridgeport Speedway. Michael had high praise for the track preparation in last year’s event.

The nine time URC Champion from Oceanview, DE has 55 career URC wins and would welcome another Bridgeport victory to increase that total.

Davie Franek picked up a Bridgeport win back in April when URC opened their 2016 season on the 5/8 mile track. Franek has set the benchmark among URC competitors so far this season as he leads the points and has four wins. Robbie Stillwaggon, Curt Michael, Josh Weller and Troy Betts round out the top five in points with Weller being the only other driver to capture a URC victory to date.

If you are a racing fan then the Bridgeport Speedway’s Three for All has something for you! Super Late Models, Small Block Modifieds and Sprint Cars all on the same racing program!

The Bridgeport Speedway is committed to maintaining a safe, fun, family atmosphere, creating life-lasting memories of excitement!

Tim Kaeding Takes Knoxville Nationals by Storm on Night 2

Outlaw Jason Johnson takes the night in points standings

KNOXVILLE, Iowa – Aug. 11, 2016 – Night two of the 5-Hour Energy Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores was more than a race to the finish on the A-Main; it was a race in time to beat the impending storms. And Tim Kaeding nailed it. “King of California” Kaeding took to Victory Lane just before severe thunderstorms storms descended on Knoxville.

“I’ve got to give this one to B.C.,” said Kaeding, dedicating his win to Bryan Clauson. “Here’s another one towards your 200. I grew up racing with his Dad. Just a great family and a hell of a racecar driver.” It was an emotional night with Ricky Stenhouse Jr. leading the field under parade laps driving Bryan Clauson’s 17W.

Thursday’s 25-lap A-Main is Kaeding’s third career Knoxville Nationals preliminary feature. “It’s so unbelievable,” said Kaeding. “We’ve struggled so bad here at Knoxville the last few years, especially in this 3[K] car. We had a win taken away last year, because we had a muffler that was tampered with more than anything. You know, we’ve been fast. We just haven’t been as fast as we need to be, so for us to be able to come out tonight and win prelim night at Knoxville is a feat within itself.”

With 20 World of Outlaws Craftsman@ Sprint Car Series victories under his belt, Kaeding charged from fourth position to second at the wave of the green, tailing Dale Blaney and finally passing him in Lap 8.

A later caution for Justin Henderson, then in third, cleared the field for Outlaw Jason Johnson and last year’s Knoxville Nationals Night 2 winner Terry McCarl to pass Blaney and duke it out for second in the final laps. McCarl managed to take it for a moment in Lap 22, but couldn’t hold it, and Johnson shot forward, looking to Kaeding just a little too late.
Coming out of Heat 1, where McCarl scored the fourth spot, the Price Chopper No. 7x had a quick engine change. “We were kind of in a hurry there, and I didn’t get the car set up exactly the way

I wanted to,”said McCarl. “I think we can definitely be a lot better come Saturday night.”
Meanwhile, it was a good night for the Outlaws in Time Trials with Brad Sweet making quicktime at 15.465 seconds (and winning the Last Chance Showdown), followed by Outlaws Joey Saldana and David Gravel, former Outlaw Kerry Madsen, and Outlaw Jason Johnson, who later scored his second place spot in the A-Main.

“It’s great confidence for my race team,” said Johnson. “To be part of the World of Outlaws category you’ve got to defend your territory. Obviously we wanted to win, but I felt like we had a really good run.”

Two Outlaws will lead the field to green on Saturday night, Daryn Pittman and Jason Johnson.
Going into Friday’s 5-Hour Energy Knoxville Nationals, Daryn Pittman holds the lead in points standings with 485 points. Jason Johnson holds a close second with 481, followed by Kerry Madsen at 479, and Jamie Veal at 477. Donny Schatz and Chad Kemenah are tied for the fifth spot at 476.

Rico Abreu Parks It Hard on Hard Knox Friday – for B.C.
A great night for Pennsylvania drivers

KNOXVILLE, Iowa – Aug. 12, 2016 – A year ago, on FVP Hard Knox Friday Night of the 55th Annual Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores, Bryan Clauson won the non-qualifier feature starting from third position and earned his 17th spot in the A Main the following night. Tonight, it was Rico Abreu who did the same – and he did it for Clauson.

“We just parked it for B.C.,” said Abreu from Victory Lane. “I’ve been waiting to get that one for Brian. We’ve raced a few times since he passed, and I’ve been waiting to say those words – ‘parked it’ – which is definitely something he created and now is something that we’re all racing to do. It’s very special, and we’re all racing with heavy hearts.”

With this win, his first ever at Knoxville, Abreu will start seventeeth in the A Main tomorrow night. “This is my fourth season racing with Paul Silva,” said Abreu. “He’s built phenomenal race cars. We switched to Eagle [Motorsports | Sprint Car] Chassis this year, and it’s taken a little bit for us to get going, but now I feel like we have a really big head of steam, and we’ve had a lot of accomplishments.”

Coming off his Ironman win at Pevely last week, Abreu grabbed the lead in the 5-hour Energy Knoxville Nationals FVP/Speed Sport Night A Main in the first lap and held it all the way through to the end. Behind him, a battle ensued for the remaining three spots between Lucas Wolfe (who started on the pole), Greg Hodnett, Brian Brown, Danny Lasoski and Logan Schuchart.

Lasoski, who had tailed Abreu into second in Lap 1, held his position until Hodnett took it from him in Lap 10 after making his way back up from fifth. Meanwhile, Brown, pushed to fourth when Hodnett passed him in Lap 8, held his position until Lap 21. With Schuchart pushing on him, Brown climbed the wall to avoid Trey Spark’s 23S after a spin. Both Brown and Spark were towed off the field.

On the restart, Wolfe and Schuchart battled for fourth, with Wolfe finally taking it in Lap 23.
Hodnett, Lasoski, and Wolfe will take positions 18, 19, and 20 in Saturday’s feature.
“Making it to Knoxville Nationals is what every sprint car driver gears up for,” said Hodnett. “It makes it tough, a tough deal like tonight. Our non-qualifiers race was brutal.”

Hodnett wasn’t the only Pennsylvania driver to score a win tonight, however. Quicktime in both time trials (A&B) went to Pennsylvania, with Wolfe coming in at 15.096 and Jacob Allen coming in at 15.294. And fifth and sixth positions in the A Main went to Pennsylvania’s Tim Shaffer and Logan Schuchart respectively.

Another big win for the evening went to Kraig Kisner, who won the Speed Sport World Challenge, securing position 25 in Saturday’s championship, along with a check for $10,000. This is Kisner’s fifth Knoxville win.

The 56th 5-Hour Energy Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores concludes tomorrow night with a much coveted $150,000 win. To find out more information and to learn how to buy tickets, visit http://www.woosprint.com/knoxville-nationals.

Hamlin, PA – Hamlin Speedway Halted By Storm After Six Features Are Completed
By: Steve Pados, GA Motorsports Media

As the summer sunshine continues to capture the beautiful scenic Pocono Mountain landscape, the drivers and crews of a special breed of racers continue to compete and put on great shows at the Hamlin Speedway and Saturday night was no exception. Promoters Denise and Randy Smith offered another fabulous edition of the 2016 racing season at Hamlin and the talented roster of drivers once again displayed their daredevil, race to the walls brand of racing excitement. A large crowd was on hand to witness the show as close to one hundred racers came to do battle on Saturday evening. Unfortunately, a quick hitting thunderstorm brought a sudden end to the racing activity after six events were completed and the remaining All Star Slingshot feature will be the first event on the speedway on September 9th. The six feature card was once again presented by S&S Speedways Indoor Go Karts located in Snydersville, Pennsylvania.

When the final scorecards were tallied it was “The Oxford Express” Dale Kober getting back in the win column in the Super Slinger finale. Damon Paul continues to raise the bar as he sped to his fourth win of the season in the Hampton RV and Trailer Stage One Modified Division. “Bad” Chad Sandt utilized all of the speedway real estate to capture his fourth win of the season in the Wingless 600 Sprint main. Paul Richards Jr added another notch to his gun belt with his seventh win of the season in the Winged 270 Sprint main. Jared Silfee was in the zone as he raced to his fourth win of the season at Hamlin in the Junior Slingshot finale. “The Mac Attack” Mack Brink was spot on as he sped to his second victory of the season in the Rookie Wingless 600 feature event.

The six feature events were all excellent runs and the “stars of tomorrow” Junior Slingshot drivers continue to excel with each turn of the steering wheel even though it was a short field taking the green on Saturday night. JJ Rice jumped into the lead at the drop of the green flag but a three car jingle in turn three brought the field to a halt and eliminated three cars from the fray. On the restart it would be Rice leading for two laps but yielding to a high flying Jared Silfee on lap three. Silfee attacked the race track as he quickly sped away from the rest of the field. Hunter Lapp kept pace throughout but Silfee proved to have the hot hand on this evening of racing and would earn his fourth win of the season. Lapp, who also earned runner-up honors on Tuesday evening at the Reading Fairgrounds, added another runner-up finish to his expanding racing resume. Cole Stangle was third with JJ Rice in fourth and Emily Fleming fifth.

Damon Paul raced into the lead in turn two at the start of the Hampton RV and Trailer Stage One Modified main event. That would be the only move he needed as he controlled the point and the incoming storm that was about to hit the speedway grounds. The race would be called after 15-laps as a completed feature as in a matter of seconds the racetrack would be awash with a major storm hitting the area. Damon Paul was the winner with 69 year old Will Casazza doing great work in the runner-up role. Bill Dianella was third while Charlie Bodine and Cole Stangle completed the top five. Chloe Andreas, Janell Geary, Joel Smith and Evan Civick completed the field.

The rookie 600 Sprint feature found Brett Altemose hustling out front at the start of the event. Altemose was very good at the top of the raceway and withstood the early pressure from Noah Zielinski. Mack Brink found his way forward and slipped past Zielinski to assume the runner-up role and then began to pressure Altemose with some amazing runs off of the baseline of the speedway. On lap-17, Altemose would jump the cushion in turns one and two and allowed Brink to gain control of the lead. Brink would earn his second win of the season. The rest of the field scrambled at the end as Altemose slid out of the groove and Jakson Ring and Geordan Marrero would get by him for second and third. Altemose would finish fourth in a great run and Zielinski would round out the top five. The second five was headed up by newcomer Scott Myers with Tyler Galatro, newcomer Jared Lilly, the returning Jerry Rutledge and Cody Powell completing the top ten.

The 270 Sprint headliner found “Deuce” Glenn Macomber getting the jump on the field when the green flag was displayed. The event settled into a high speed chase as Paul Richards Jr began to chase Macomber around the speedway. Kyle Ferrucci slipped off the pace with problems in lap nine. On lap-13, Richards made the move of the evening as Macomber slipped past a slower car rolled a bit high on the speedway allowing Richards to also slip past the slower car and dive under Macomber to take control of the point. Once in front, Richards opened up a wide margin went on to capture the win with Macomber second, Randy Gombert third and Stephen Weirich fourth.

Super Slinger action found Steve Pirone getting the jump on the field at the start of the event. Pirone would lead the first four laps until Dale Kober found the inside line open and made a dash for the lead. Once in front, Kober was able to race to daylight while ten-time winner in 2016 Wes Hearn was locked in a battle with the returning Roger Collins and then Steve Pirone. Kober built up a huge lead and drove away to his second win of the season with Hearn making a valiant effort to land in the runner-up role. Pirone had a great outing in third while Collins and steady Jim Conroy rounded out the top five. Jeff Haduck, newcomer Mike Taylor and Ron Jablonka made up the remainder of the field.

The 600 Wingless Sprint main found Saylorsburg resident Chad Sandt driving to daylight at the drop of the green flag. Dylan Martin kept pace early on before he gave way to Danny Buccafusca. Buccafusca threw all he had at Sandt but soon had to contend with Brandon Azzalina as he worked the top of the raceway to perfection to make it a three car battle. Azzalina dogged Buccafusca until he made a clean pass to slip past him. Sandt withstood the heavy pressure from Azzalina for the last five laps to capture his fourth win of the season. Azzalina, Buccafusca, JD Casazza in a great run and Joel Smith completed the top five. Ryan Quackenbush headed up the second five with Mick D’Agostino, Mike Myers, Zac Azzalina and Mike Van Pelt completing the top ten.

PEARL JAMS:

Heat racing action at Hamlin continued to fuel the fires that make Hamlin Speedway the place to be on Saturday nights as Jerry Rutledge and Scott Myers were victorious in the Rookie 600 Sprint heat events. One heat was required for the Stage One Modifieds with Damon Paul securing the win. Jared Silfee captured the heat win for the Junior Slingers. Chad Sandt and Dylan Martin captured the two heats in the Wingless 600 Sprints and captured heat number two. Two rounds of heats were need to establish the starting lineup for the All Star Slingshots and capturing heat wins were Austin Silfee, Ashley Kober and Josh Marcus in the first round while Chris Kurtz, Brett Bieber and Mike McLaughlin were victorious in the second round.

The Super Slingers ran time trials with Dale Kober holding the hot hand at 14.302 seconds. Paul Richards was top timer in the 270 Sprints as he stopped the clocks at 11.820 seconds.

Newcomers or returning racers to the Hamlin Speedway scene for the Saturday night racing action included Tommy Stillo in the Junior Slingshots. Roger Collins returned to the speedway for the first time since his harrowing backstretch accident a few weeks ago and was solid throughout the evening in his return to action. Mike Taylor was a newcomer in both the Super Slingers and the All Stars. Randy Gombert was back in action in the 270 Sprints. Pat Bealer, who picked up a win last week in the 270 Sprints, had a 600 Sprint on hand to do battle and was strong until he encountered some problems late in the feature. Janell Geary returned to action in the Stage One Modifieds. The Rookie 600 Sprints were filled out with Jared Lilly, Jerry Rutledge, Cody Powell and David Trego, all new faces in recent weeks. Dylan Hoch, Anthony Raisner, Henry Anderson, Joe Toth and Sarah Bohlin were new additions to the All Star Slingshots.

A new PA system was installed for the racing action and still needs a few tweaks that retired racer Tex Snyder will help iron out in the upcoming weeks. Tex still has his race equipment for sale at reasonable prices and has an ad up on microracing.com.

Randy Smith had the speedway in great shape for the evening of speed and three and four wide action in the heat events was commonplace.

“The Flying Dutchman” Richie Van Orden was taking in the show and the former track record holder in the Slingshots is preparing for some Sportsman racing at OCFS and Accord Speedways.

The speedway paid their final respects to Bryan Clauson, who passed way last Sunday evening at the age of 27. The Bullet was a guest on the Gasoline Alley TV show five times that was hosted by Ed and Steve Pados.

The speedway will be dark next week to allow our racing families to enjoy some quality time off from the rigors of racing. The speedway will return to action on August 27th with a full seven division show of racing excitement, highlighted by a special event for the Wingless 600 Sprints.

SWANSON SPECTACULAR IN SALEM’S “JOE JAMES/PAT O’CONNOR MEMORIAL”

Salem, Indiana August 13, 2016 – On a night in which every person at Salem Speedway was mindful of Bryan Clauson, how fitting it was that a car adorned with number 63 “parked it” in victory lane in Saturday night’s 57th running of the “Joe James/Pat O’Connor Memorial.”

Kingsburg, California’s Kody Swanson took over the race lead on lap 61 after Aaron Pierce spun out of the top spot between turns three and four. Swanson went virtually unchallenged throughout the final 15 laps of the USAC Silver Crown series’ first visit to the track since 1988 to take his 15th career USAC Silver Crown victory, tying him for fourth all-time with J.J. Yeley.

Earlier in the night, Swanson became the first driver ever to break into the 15-second bracket in a Silver Crown car around Salem’s high banks on his way to a new track record and ProSource Fast Qualifying time, which put him on the pole position for the night’s 75-lap event.

After amazingly avoiding the rain all throughout the afternoon, the skies opened up just prior to the start of the main event. The brief shower moistened the track, but, 20 minutes later, through the efforts of the track crew, the track was dry and drivers were called to their cars.

At the drop of the green, Swanson jumped out to the front with Pierce in second, back eight car lengths.

As the sparks began to fly into the dusk, Pierce began to close on Swanson for the point. However, in turn one, Austin Nemire lost control of his machine, spinning sideways on the banking as Casey Shuman came onto the scene, making contact with Nemire’s left front with the nose of his Predator chassis. Shuman would restart, sans nose-piece, while Nemire would make his exit on the hook.

Pierce was able to hang with Swanson on the lap nine restart and, on lap 11, dove underneath Swanson on the bottom of turn two to take the lead.

On the 13th lap, Jacob Wilson, the only past “Joe James/Pat O’Connor Memorial” winner in the field, slowed on the back straightaway with a broken weight jacker, forcing him into the pit area for the remainder of the night.

Just a handful of laps later, Pierce and Swanson came upon the lapped car of Patrick Lawson as the pack hit the start/finish line. Pierce nearly made contact with Lawson, slowing him down a notch as Swanson dove to the inside, allowing Windom to corral second as Swanson got shuffled back to third.

Pierce was able to keep Windom at bay as the race approached the one-third point, but on a lap 29 restart, Windom drove downhill off of the turn four banking, giving him the momentum he needed to pull side-by-side to the inside of Pierce into turn one. Between turns one and two, Windom’s right front tire made contact with the left rear of Pierce, sending off a puff of smoke and knocking Pierce squirrely. Nonetheless, Pierce was able to resettle to hold off the challenge and retain the lead as the two raced down the back straight away.

As ominous clouds hung over the trees in turns one and two, Pierce maintained his advantage, running mere inches from the outside wall in turns three and four, leaving little room for error.

Lap 41, Swanson turned low below Windom in the second turn. Swanson engaged in a drag-race down the back straight, beating Windom to turn three as he dirt-tracked it in sideways in front of Windom, hanging on to grab second.

With two-thirds of the race now complete, Pierce and Swanson were nose-to-tail for the lead with Windom and Jerry Coons, Jr. just behind, a half-lap ahead of fifth-running Bobby Santos.

Pierce continued to run on the razor’s edge up top with just 15 laps to go as he bid for his first Silver Crown victory since a 2007 victory at Darlington (S.C.) Raceway when, suddenly, the back end of his car snapped around on its own between turns three and four. Though he managed to keep the car off the concrete, Pierce was unable to tame Salem on this day after an impressive drive in which he led 50 laps.

On the restart with just 12 laps to go, no one had an answer for Kody Swanson, who shot away from the field to take an unchallenged victory over Windom, Coons, Santos and Justin Grant.

On a night in which tributes to Bryan Clauson poured in from fans, teams and officials alike, where each car was adorned with a BC “Still Chasing 200” sticker and USAC officials donned green BC shirts in honor of the fallen driver, Swanson did what he has done so often over the past three seasons in the DePalma Motorsports/Radio Hospital – Champion Oil/Beast/Hampshire Chevy. He “parked it” in victory lane.

“This means a lot,” Kody said. “It’s a pleasure to drive for these DePalma Motorports guys anywhere, but especially at a place like Salem. This is a place where it’s usually the braver you are, the faster you go. That’s not my style. We got a little lucky. Don’t get me wrong; these guys prepare to win, but we were close enough to be able to capitalize on a couple things late in the race. I never have “parked it.” I’ve never felt like I’m worthy enough to use that term, but we “parked it” tonight for BC (Bryan Clauson).”

Chris Windom, of Canton, Illinois, continued his impressive streak of series finishes in 2016, finishing second to Swanson and, therefore, tallying his seventh consecutive top-five finish in seven series starts this season in his RPM-Fred Gormly/RPM Auto Enterprise – Seals-It/Beast/J & D Mopar.

“We were good right out of the box,” Windom said proudly. “Struggles in qualifying set us back, but Evan Avart gave me a good race car and we could drive up through there pretty quick. We got a little snug around half way through, and then Kody put a pretty bold move on me and I about spun out. That’s kind of what you have to do here, though, to pass somebody – just drive it in there and pray. This place is a little treacherous, but it’s a lot of fun and I’m glad we got to race here. We’ll take a second, though, and keep this momentum up and head to Springfield.”

Tucson, Arizona’s Jerry Coons, Jr., a 2005 USAC National Midget feature winner at Salem, took third in his Nolen Racing/KECO – Columbus Container/Beast/Tranter Chevy.
“I need to get to the gym and add about 20 pounds of muscle I think,” Coons joked. “That was harder than any 100-lapper we run anywhere else. Chris (Windom) got tight in (turns) one and two towards the end, but I was better in (turns) three and four, so when I’d make it up, he’d gain it back. We’ve been working on our pavement program and getting it better and better, so we’re happy with a third.”

Contingency award winners Saturday night at Salem Speedway were Kody Swanson (ProSource Fast Qualifier), Chris Windom (KSE Racing Products Hard Charger) and Austin Nemire (Wilwood Brakes 13th Place Finisher).

Johnson Outduels Schatz for First Knoxville Nationals Title
Outlaws Take over Victory Lane at 5-Hour Energy Knoxville Nationals

KNOXVILLE, Iowa – Aug. 13, 2016 – The 56th running of the 5-Hour Energy Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Store culminated Saturday night with the grandstands on their feet as the Ragin’ Cajun took home the win in one of the most exciting Knoxville Nationals in recent history, depriving fellow-Outlaw Donny Schatz of his tenth Nationals win.
With fireworks ablaze behind him, Jason Johnson stood on the back of his Priority Aviation #41 Maxim pounding his fists in the air as he celebrated his first-ever Nationals win and claimed the $150,000 prize.

It was a big night for the World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series as three Outlaws took over Victory Lane: Johnson, Schatz and Shane Stewart. As outlaws are wont to do, they rode in, took the loot, and left nothing but dust in their trail.

“I gave it my all,” said Johnson. “I wanted to win just as bad as Donny wanted to win, just as bad as Shane wanted to win – and probably everybody that started in A-Main. My guys gave me a great race car and I got very fortunate.”

After his runner-up finish on Night 2, the Cajun Sensation was the high point driver of the night, earning him the spot beside another fellow-Outlaw, Daryn Pittman, who started on the pole. Kerry Madsen and Jamie Veal followed, with Schatz in fifth.

By Lap 2, the battle between Schatz and Johnson was on as Schatz came up to third. Meanwhile, Outlaws Shane Stewart and Brad Sweet battled it out for sixth, with Stewart holding his ground.
Pittman hit traffic by Lap 9, and Johnson battled him from the cushion – from where he won the race – for the next couple of laps, taking the lead off the fourth turn in Lap 11. But it was short lived. Lap 12 saw Pittman and Schatz pass Johnson. And in the next two laps Schatz and Johnson charged past Pittman.

By Lap 15, the race looked as expected, with the nine-time champ a half stretch ahead.
A caution for Craig Dollansky allowed Madsen to get past Pittman, and Stewart worked his way to fifth, but Schatz held a strong lead when the mandatory caution was called after Lap 25.
The real battle began on the restart with Johnson on the cushion and Schatz down low. Johnson took the lead with a slide job off turn 4 and continued to ride the cushion so high he nearly climbed the wall in Lap 34.

Meanwhile, Madsen made a play for second, taking it from Schatz for three laps; and another three laps later, in Lap 44, Schatz took the lead back from Johnson. They battle was on as they worked the half-mile Knoxville Raceway. Jason. Donny. Jason. Donny. They battled hard, but the victory was just not meant to be for the reigning champ as Johnson “Parked It” .168 seconds earlier for the win.

“I didn’t think he could race that hard for 50 laps, but he did,”said Schatz, who didn’t think the race could be won from the top. “He did one hell of a job. I mean to run the last ten laps, or last lap – any lap during this race – it means the worlds toughtest spot in sprint car racing. And he figured out how to make it work and get there first, so hats off to him. Next year I’d like to be the one to win. But he won. He earned it. He did one hell of a job, and he figured out how to do it.”

“I know Donny wasn’t happy with me after the checkers, and that really kind of bothers me because I respect Donny as a driver and I want his respect as well,” said Johnson. “I don’t want to wreck nobody, and I want to race people clean, but like I told him, ‘God damn, dude, this is Knoxville Nationals!'”

The winning outlaw trio showed a tremendous amount of respect and admiration for each other in post-race interviews. Johnson stated he got a lesson from Stewart before the race and spent a lot of time talking with him about how to race the track. “All in all it’s a testament to friendship, to what life is all about, and to B.C.,” he said.

This important win for Johnson, flanked by Stewart and Schatz during the post-race press conference, is a great nod to his 2016 drivers interview at the start of season: “The biggest competition has to be Donny Schatz because he has set the standard,” said Johnson back in February. “But as a team, we measure ourselves up to Shane Stewart and Larson-Marks Racing because he comes from the same background as I do and he’s with a team that’s only been out here for a couple years as well.”

The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series returns to action next Tuesday at Junction Motor Speedway. To find out more information and to learn how to buy tickets, visit http://woosprint.com/junction-motor-speedway

2016 5-Hour Energy Knoxville Nationals Notebook:
Jason Johnson’s epic win over Donny Schatz at the 56th running of the 5-Hour Energy Knoxville Nationals presented by Casey’s General Stores will go down as one of the best ever. Over the race’s final 25 lap segment the two drivers traded slide jobs and the lead on several occasions, even making contact at one point. CRAIG VONDOHREN TAKES HOME BIRTHDAY PRESENT OF MORE THAN $10,000 AFTER WINNING HIS SEVENTH PIONEER POLE BUILDINGS FORREST ROGERS MEMORIAL CLASSIC AT GRANDVIEW; DYLAN SWINEHART AND RON KLINE ALSO WIN FEATURES ON SATURDAY NIGHT

BECHTELSVILLE, PA. August 14, 2016 . . . Current T.P.Trailers NASCAR 358 Modified point leader Craig VonDohren, the defending Pioneer Pole Building/Forrest Rogers Memorial race winner, gave himself a hefty birthday present when he scored the win in the 50-Lap NASCAR Whelen 358 Modified All-American Racing Series feature event Saturday night at Grandview Speedway. It was the seventh time he claimed victory in the event. VonDohren may have had a comfortable margin over runner-up Mike Gular, but his fourth feature win of the season didn’t come easy for the defending point champion, since he had to deal with heavy lapped traffic on numerous occasions. In addition to the $10,000 top prize he also pocketed $250 in bonus bucks from T.P. Trailers plus $150 in product contingency awards from VP Fuels for running gas along with the Dan’s Deli ½-way hoagie award. The racing activities were sponsored by Pioneer Pole Building and the 46th running of the event was in honor of race founder Forrest Rogers, the late father of current promoter and track owner Bruce Rogers.

Dylan Swinehart, a rookie this season in the Sportsman division and also a third generation of racing Swinehart’s – his grandfather Ray, uncle Steve and now himself, became the tenth different winner when he scored his first 25-lap NASCAR Sportsman feature career win by defeating Ryan Higgs. Swinehart also has another famous racing grandfather ‑ Dennis Bailey. Both Ray and Dennis were previous point champions. Throughout the season the youngster has endured so many obstacles and he finally was glad to get the monkey off his back. Last week he had failed to qualify for the race. He also picked up an additional $100 from T.P. Trailers and the ½-way Dan’s Deli hoagie award.

In BRC Late Model action Ron Kline overtook leader Brian Shuey on the 19th lap and went on to claim back to back feature wins in the 25-Lap race. T.P. Trailers also awarded him $100.

There have now been 24 different feature winners in the Saturday night NASCAR sanctioned events presented this season.

Tony Stewart’s All Star Circuit of Champions 410 Sprint racers will be in action on Thursday, August 18th at 7:30 p.m. and will feature some of the best Sprint car talents in the nation. The TSRS 305 Sprints will also be part of the Thunder on the Hill event.

Henning’s Trains of Lansdale will have some Lionel trains to give away to lucky youngsters on Saturday, August 20th. Racing will feature the NASCAR T.P.Trailers 358 Modifieds, BRC Late Models and Sportsman. Only three nights of point racing remain in the chase for the lucrative track and NASCAR championships.

Bobby Gunther-Walsh led the first lap of the Modified feature before the red was thrown on the second lap when Tyler Dippel found himself in the backstretch wall with heavy impact. He was shaken up a bit, but walked to the ambulance under his own power. It was still Gunther-Walsh in command on the restart with pressure coming from Brett Kressley, Nate Christman, Ray Swinehart and Justin Grim.

Kressley put the Norm Hansell-owned No. 357 into the lead on the 11th lap restart needed for a multi-car fourth turn tangle. By this time VonDohren, who started 14th, had piloted the PPB/Keith Harring Transportation No. 1C mount to second to challenge the Modified rookie.

By the 18th lap the front five consisting of Kressley, VonDohren, Christman, Mike Gular and Kyle Weiss encountered the back markers that were also racing for positions and did heed the move over flag.

VonDohren used the lap cars to his advantage and took over first on the 19th lap, but one lap later Kressley was back in front as the pair swapped the lead back and forth.

Lap 21 VonDohren moved ahead once again and immediately opened up daylight leaving Kressley, Christman, Gular and Weiss giving chase.

With ten laps to go debris in the first turn brought out the final yellow. VonDohren was still in command when action resumed, but Gular quickly motored past Christman and Kressley and was now second in pursuit of the leader.

It looked like VonDohren was on a rail as the laps wound down and he raced to his 99th career win. Chasing him across the finish line were Gular, Kressley, Ray Swinehart and Jeff Strunk. Rounding out the top ten were Christman, Jared Umbenhauer, Kenny Gilmore, Duane Howard and Weiss.

2014 race winner Dr. Danny Johnson, a New York standout racing talent, made a rare appearance, but could only muster a 14th-place finish.

Justin Grim, Gunther-Walsh and R. Swinehart won the heats with Mike Kellner winning the consi.

Sportsman action saw rookie Ken Bock show the way for two laps before Steve Young forged ahead.

The lead changed for the third time on lap six when young Swinehart took the lead.

Behind Swinehart, Young and Derrick Smith, Ryan Higgs and Andrew Kreis, all rookies, diced for second through fifth.

Smith overtook second on the ninth circuit and set his signs on Swinehart.

The front runners soon encountered lapped traffic which they had to use hands-up driving tactics.

Brad Arnold brought out the only yellow with three laps to go when he stopped in the third turn. Before the restart, Smith, who was running second since lap nine, pitted after he made contact with the wall earlier and suffered damage. This put Higgs, Craig Whitmoyer, Young and Kreis, nose-to-tail, but Swinehart wasted no time staying ahead.

Swinehart kept all challengers at bay and went on to claim a well-deserved triumph followed by Higgs, Whitmoyer, Jim Housworth and Young.

Heats were won by Kreis, Bock and Young. The consi went to Brandon Whitmoyer.

Devin Frey took the early lead in the Late Model feature before Shawn Horning slowed along the homestretch. Rain was soon approaching, but not falling on the track and as the cars restarted and headed into turns one and two, a heavy downpour broke loose with Frey and a few others to hit the wall. Eliminated were Frey, Drew Weisser, Lou Egrie and Sean Merkel. As quick as the rain started, it stopped. Since so many cars were damaged, management decided to run the modified and sportsman consolation races, then their features and conclude with the remainder of the Late Model feature allowing them time to repair their cars.

When the race resumed, four-time feature winner and two-time point champion Brian Shuey was the race leader followed by Wayne Pfeil, Kline, Corey Merkel and Chuck Schutz.

Pfeil and Kline battled several laps before Kline advanced to second, but Pfeil didn’t give up easily and challenged him. This gave Shuey some breathing room.

Once Kline broke free of Pfeil he reeled Shuey in and passed him on the 19th lap.

Once in front Kline never relinquished first and went on to chalk up his 35th career win followed by Shuey, Pfeil, C. Merkel and current point leader and defending champion Schutz.

Frey and Egrie won the heats.

Brown Captures Regional Hilborn Tri State Race Saver Sprint Event at Bridgeport

Sweedsboro, NJ August 13, 2016 – Dave Brown took the lead at the wave of the green flag and never looked back as he drove away from the competition to pick up a flag to flag win in the fifth hand of the Tanner Dairy Store/Thayer Performance 2016 Poker Series to pick up his first ace of the season. It was also a regional event for the Tri State Race Saver Sprints (TSRS) – a confidence builder for Brown who plans to travel to Nebraska in September for the national event. It was Brown’s third win of 2016.

Brown had nothing but praise for his crew and sponsors. “If it wasn’t for these guys,” Brown indicated, “we wouldn’t be able to run as competitively as we do!” Brown had high praise for his two man crew, made up of his dad and Damien and sponsors Ennis Oil, Fuels & Burner Service and D Capps Carpentry.

“We changed gears twice tonight,” Brown explained. “The track was so heavy when we went out for warm-ups. It was kind of crazy – we ran our heats first and our feature last,” Brown explained. “The track was completely different. I just watched the track.”

Brown became the seventh different winner in Bridgeport TSRS competition and the fifth different winner in the Tanner Dairy Store/Thayer Performance Poker Series.

Mike Haggenbottom started outside Brown and finished second. After five hands in the 2016 Poker Series, Haggenbottom leads the way with three Kings. Haggenbottom has two Bridgeport wins this season – both Friday night races – but he has finished second on three different occasions in Saturday night events.

Haggenbottom was able to narrow the margin between first and second but Brown ran to the checkered unchallenged.

Eddie Wagner finished third after winning the first hand of the 2016 Poker Series. After all of the discussion throughout the day about the heat and humidity and the effect it would have on the drivers, Wagner claimed that when he’s in the race car, he didn’t even notice the heat. “I was actually hotter at six o’clock when I was grooving tires than I was in the race car,” Wagner explained. “You don’t even notice it while you’re racing.”

Tim Tanner was the fourth place finisher with the Tanner Dairy Store No. 18. In addition to competing with TSRS, Tanner brought his 360 sprint car along and took some hot laps in preparation for Tuesday night’s Three for All event on the 5/8 mile track.

After running just outside the top five for most of the race, Joe Kay found himself behind the grandstand for the first time this season, picking up the fifth position in the final laps when Logan Diehl ran into mechanical difficulty.

Rick Stief, Brendon Poff, Diehl, Samantha Lieberman and Zach Burd rounded out the top ten.

The drivers of the Hilborn Tri State Race Saver Sprint Cars paid tribute to Bryan Clauson and Jim Campbell as they made their way around the 5/8 mile Bridgeport Speedway for the wave lap of their twenty lap main event on Saturday night. The “Missing Man” formation was used to honor both drivers. It was a day short of the one year anniversary of Campbell’s fatal accident. Many of the cars carried bright green ribbons in honor of Clauson.

HILBORN TSRS 305 SPRINTS – 5th Hand of Poker Series (20 laps): 1. Dave Brown, 2. Mike Haggenbottom, 3. Eddie Wagner, 4. Tim Tanner, Jr., 5. Joe Kay, 6. Rick Stief, 7. Brendon Poff, 8. Logan Diehl, 9. Samantha Lieberman, 10. Zach Burd, 11. Bryant Davis, 12. Erika Palmai, 13. Douglas Snow

KRAUSE BEATS HEAT TO WIN WALL MODIFIEDS SATURDAY

WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. August 13, 2016 – Young veteran stock car driver Andrew Krause beat both the excessive heat provided by the weather and the on the track heat offered by contender Derek Hopkinson of Toms River to win the 40-lapper for the Downs Ford Modifieds at Wall Stadium Speedway Saturday night. The Holmdel resident’s second win of the campaign was a turnaround as his chances of winning two big races recently were spoiled by a broken wheel spacer in the “Garden State Classic” and a broken wheel in the “Summer Scorcher.”

Because of his recent bad fortunes Krause started on the front row and took full advantage of the spot. Krause jumped to the lead early but was forced to battle Hopkinson every step of the way. A handful of cautions for minor incidents forced many double file restarts during the first half of the event with Krause and Hopkinson spending most of their time wrestling side-by-side around the third mile high banked paved oval.

The second half of the event calmed down as far as yellow flags went but Hopkinson still offered a stiff challenge most of the way. Jason Treat of Jackson posted his best finish of the season with an impressive third while Brick’s Shawna Ingraham recovered from a first lap spin to finish fourth and Willingoboro’s Zack Alspach was fifth.

“It was in the back of mind my all through the second half of the race,” Krause said in victory lane in regards to his recent issues with broken parts. “I just tried not to think about that and focus on the race. Derek was real fast tonight and kept the pressure on. He is a clean driver so I knew he would race clean but hard.

“I want to thank my mom, my dad, my sister and everyone who works on this car. They never give up and that really keeps me going.”

The O’Shea’s Auto Repair Factory Stocks were also in the spotlight in an extra-distance 50-lap race and defending champion Joe Mongeau of Brick took the win after passing teammate Richie Byrne of Howell. Ryan Flores, Scott Riggleman of Manchester and Scott Maher of Brick were third through fifth.

Former champion Kevin Davison of Howell won the first of two Snap On Sportsman main events. In the early evening 25-lapper, rain postponed from July 30, Davison took the lead on the sixth lap and fought off Tyler Truex of Mayetta and Brick’s Robert Sutphin for the win. Manchester’s Shannon Mongeau and Tuckerton’s Robby Walton wrapped up the top five.

Howell’s Jimmy Blewett won the regularly scheduled Sportsman 30-lapper taking the lead with 20-laps in. Truex was again the runner-up with Matt Langbein of Laurence Harbor, Davison and Jackson’s Blake Barney completing the top five finishers.

Two first time winners were in the spotlight after a pair of 25-lappers for the Surfside Collision 4 Cylinder Stocks were completed. In the first, rain postponed from July 30, Howell’s Brian Osborn took the victory over Beachwood’s Todd Pilla, Fred Cannock of Port Monmouth, Brick’s Ronnie Mullen and Mike Carr of Wall.

Kyle Scisco of Jackson won the regularly scheduled 4 Cylinder Stock main over Mullen, Osborn, Brick’s Jason Lane and Pilla.

Dalton Rovira won the main event for the visiting Micro Stocks.

Stock car racing continues this Saturday night (August 20) as the speedway presents “Champions’ Night” with many of the track’s past title winners on hand to meet with fans. On the track the Downs Ford Modifieds will battle in a 40-lap main event and the Snap On Sportsman cars will compete in a rain postponed 50-lapper. The Surfside Collision 4 Cylinder Stocks will compete in two 25-lappers and the Elite Maintenance Limited Late Models and the Green Flag Driving Experience Legend Cars will each compete in a 25-lapper. Grandstand seating opens at 5:00 p.m., qualifying starts at 5:45 p.m. and feature racing begins at 7:00 p.m.

The complete updated regular season schedule, which runs on Saturday nights through the end of September, is available at wallspeedwayracing.com as are the rules and regulations for all divisions. Post-season events, the “Spooky Spectacular” in October and the Thanksgiving weekend “Turkey Derby,” are also being planned.

Wall Stadium is located on Route 34 in Wall Township, N.J., just one mile north of Garden State Parkway exit 98 and Interstate 195 exit 35B. The speedway hotline number is 732-681-6400, the website is wallspeedwayracing.com and email address is CKMotorsports@aol.com.

DOMINANT DONNY

Schatz wins at Junction Motor Speedway

MCCOOL JUNCTION, Neb. – August 16, 2016 – Entering the World of Outlaws Craftsman® Sprint Car Series event at Junction Motor Speedway on Tuesday night, Donny Schatz had never finished off the podium in five career starts at the 3/8-mile. The seven-time and defending series champion extended that streak, while adding to his win total at the track, as he dominated the 30-lap main event.

Schatz started second and took the lead on the top side of the track from pole sitter Joey Saldana. Schatz would go on to lead all 30 laps aboard the Bad Boy Off-Road J&J for Tony Stewart Racing.

“You definitely had to be up front tonight, because the track was so fast,” said Schatz. “When it started moving it went right to the top. When we got to lapped traffic we had trouble getting by guys, but they were fast cars we were trying to get by. The start is always important and you never really try to push the issue.”

The race was slowed by a pair of cautions, both on the second lap. On the first restart, which was a double file restart, Schatz chose the high side of the track and shot out to a lead. Following the second caution, officials elected to go with single file restarts the remainder of the night. On that restart, Schatz again used a strong run to quickly open a gap on David Gravel, who had moved into second, after Joey Saldana suffered a broken rear end while running second.

Late in the race, Schatz caught lapped traffic, and with how fast the track was it took several laps to get around a couple of cars. That allowed Gravel to close as the leader was not able to get around those machines. With six laps remaining, Schatz was able to get around the two cars he had been trying to lap and pulled away.

“My crew did a great job,” he said. “Tony Stewart Racing has such a good group of guys and they keep doing such a great job with the race car. When the race car is like that, they are fun to drive. It helps when you get yourself in a good position on the front row.”
For Schatz, the win was his 17th of the season and his third triumph at Junction Motor Speedway. He is the only driver that has won more than once at Junction Motor Speedway. The win also helped him extend his lead in the championship standings as he chases his eighth title.

“There is a lot expected out of us, and I expect a lot out of myself as well as my race team at any race track we go to,” noted Schatz. “After 20 years, you’d think you’d be able to figure some stuff out. I think it’s more of that than anything. It’s not a confidence thing. These guys know what they are doing. Some days I may look like I know what I am doing, and some days I actually know what I’m doing. Today we seemed to get everything lined up just right.”

Gravel was able to get side-by-side with Schatz coming off turn-four on lap-23, but was not able to make a pass. Late in the race, Gravel had to fend off several charges by Brad Sweet as the pair battled for the second spot. The runner-up finish for Gravel was his 34th top-five finish of the season.

“I had a shot for one lap and then Donny (Schatz) got by Paul (McMahan) and set sail,” said Gravel. “I think we got a little free at the end and I got the wing back probably too far to roll that fast of a race track. We’re happy with second. We started second in the dash and gained a row there and gained another row in the feature, so I can’t complain with that. I would have liked to have won, but it just wasn’t in the cards tonight, so we’ll move on to Sunday.”

Sweet started third and fell back to fifth early, before making a late-race charge. While the lead duo was negotiating the couple of lapped cars during the last 10 laps, Sweet was able to close in on Gravel, but couldn’t quite get enough of a run to make a pass.

“It was awfully hard to get by the traffic, because there was so much grip there, three-quarters of the way up the track with that cushion,” explained Sweet. “The lapped cars were just fast enough that you couldn’t clear them. I would get a run on David (Gravel), but he covered it up pretty good and he was getting good enough runs off the exit that we weren’t able to get the right run to make the pass.”

The third-place finish for Sweet was his 33rd top-five of the season as he kept pace with Gravel in the point standings. The pair is separated by just three markers.
“You’ll have nights like these and you have to be happy with a podium finish,” Sweet said. “The Ollie’s Bargain Outlet car has been fast and we didn’t get the right draw, but Donny (Schatz) did a great job in traffic clearing those couple guys. It got close for a second. That’s what he does really well and we have to do a little better. We’ll keep working on it and hopefully we can get some wins.”

Daryn Pittman finished fourth, after a side-by-side battle with Shane Stewart, who crossed the line fifth. Logan Schuchart finished sixth, with Jason Sides seventh and Jason Johnson eighth. Ian Madsen, who opened the night by setting a new track record in time trials finished ninth. Paul McMahan rounded out the top-10.

The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series returns to action on Sunday, August 21 at Angell Park Speedway in Sun Prairie, Wisconsin, along with Bumper to Bumper IRA Sprints.

THORSON’S LAST CORNER PASS CAPS SPIN AND WIN PERFORMANCE IN WILD LANCO USAC MIDGET DEBUT

Newmanstown, Pennsylvania August 16, 2016 – It took two whole days to finally get underway, but once it did, the 2016 “Pennsylvania Midget Week” opener was well worth the wait.

Minden, Nevada’s Tanner Thorson recovered from a lap four spin, carved his way from the tail-end of the field, setting him up for a last lap, last corner slide job on teammate Spencer Bayston to take an improbable USAC Midget National Championship/ARDC feature win Tuesday night at Lanco’s Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway.

A heavy shower in the late afternoon hours doused the Lanco surface with moisture, creating a lightning quick and gnarly racing surface for USAC’s debut at the 1/8-mile dirt bullring.

Thorson got the jump from his outside front row starting position at the start of the 30-lap main event, using the topside to glide around Pennsylvania Midget star Alex Bright for the top spot who, along with Brady Bacon, formed a three-car breakaway in the opening laps.

However, on lap four, Thorson entered the first turn and promptly looped it all by his lonesome, bringing about a yellow flag and relegating him to the back of the pack where he would restart 19th with 27 laps to go.

Alex Bright would inherit the lead from Thorson and, throughout the middle portion of the race, would firmly establish himself as the man to beat as a hornet’s nest of cars developed behind him in a battle for the lead as he resisted a challenge from the winner of three of the last four series races, Chad Boat.

Nearing the halfway mark, leading series rookie Carson Macedo threw a big slider for the second position on Boat, but Boat was able to slide him back to retain the spot as the two drag raced into turn one.

Yet, Boat’s magnificent run of seven-straight top-five finishes would take a severe blow on lap 17 when he slid sideways through the middle of turns three and four while battling Macedo, coming to rest in the middle of the racetrack without making contact. Boat would restart.

On the lap 17 restart, Bright snaked the field down low to the green as Macedo jumped to the top, but just as quickly as it began, the red flag was displayed for an upside down Gage Walker who tipped it over against the guardrail between turns one and two.

On the ensuing restart, Bright chose the middle route into turns one and two while Macedo rode the cushion, but as Macedo began to line up a slider on Bright for the lead in the third turn, action slowed yet again as the yellow flag dropped for a backwards Holly Shelton between turns one and two.

Fourth-running Brady Bacon was involved in a tangle in the fourth turn on lap 18 that also collected top-10 runners Steve Buckwalter and Kenney Johnson. Johnson would be the only driver unable to restart.

Macedo was getting better and better as the race wore on, but yellow after yellow halted his procession to the front, keeping him at bay in the second position with just 13 laps to go.

But, on the following restart, Macedo hounded Bright for the top spot. Two accomplished racers – Bright, a Chili Bowl prelim winner and Macedo, a World of Outlaws feature winner – each duked it out for their first career USAC win with less than ten to go.

On lap 21, Macedo made his move, diamonding off turn two and rocketing down the banking to grab the lead from Bright as the two sprinted down the back straight. Bright counter-punched, slipping back by Macedo briefly in turn one before Macedo shot back by Bright to secure the point.

Heartbreak ensued for Bright shortly after losing the lead when his right rear tire deflated, forcing him into the infield with just a handful of circuits left after leading all drivers with 17 laps led during the feature.

With just four laps to go, Macedo, Bayston and now Thorson, who had charged his way back to the front from the tail, led the field to the restart. Macdeo maintained his high-side presence into turn one while Bayston dove to the bottom to slide up in front of Kunz/Curb-Agajanian Motorsports teammate Macedo for the lead.

As soon as Bayston cleared Macedo between turns one and two, Macedo hit the brakes with the intention of changing direction on a dime, dipping underneath Bayston and driving away on the back straight as Bayston’s momentum carried him to the outside turn two wall.

However, Macedo’s car stalled before he could put the notion into action, coming to a stop in the middle of turn two to bring out the yellow once again and, thus, moved Thorson to second, directly behind his teammate and race leader Bayston with just four laps remaining.

Bayston exploded off the starting blocks for a solid restart on lap 27 as he gapped himself from Thorson, but that proved to be short-lived as Thorson quickly reeled Bayston back in, putting him in prime position to pounce in a moment’s notice.

As Thorson shadowed Bayston’s every move, coming to the white flag, Bayston got a big bite coming off of turn two, pulling a wheelstand half the length of the back straight away, yet still maintaining his ever-dwindling lead over Thorson as the two entered the final lap.

Bayston and Thorson held court on the topside of turns one and two after receiving flagman Warren Alston’s white flag, but Thorson, who proved to have the fastest car throughout the main event, appeared to be waiting for just the right moment to make the move, leaving no chance for Bayston to return the favor.

As Bayston entered turn three through the middle, Thorson aimed his machine like a dart from the mid-point of the back straight toward the bottom of turns three and four at full throttle, pitching the car sideways and sliding up in front of Bayston at the exit of turn four. That slowed Bayston’s momentum and pulled his front wheels off the ground as he got back on the gas, allowing Thorson to nail the bullseye and finish out the last 30 feet to the flagstand in front to record the astonishing spin and win victory by .296 seconds over Bayston, Tyler Thomas, Jim Radney and Ryan Robinson.

Incidentally, it was the first time a last corner pass for the lead was made on the final lap in a USAC National Midget feature since Thorson lost the lead to teammate Rico Abreu at Sun Prairie, Wisconsin’s Angell Park Speedway in July of 2015.

Thorson’s last lap heroics led to his third win of the season after June victories at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville, Ind. and Riverside International Speedway in West Memphis, Ark., tying him with Boat for the most series victories during the 2016 season in his Keith Kunz – Curb-Agajanian Motorsports/TRD – JBL Audio/Bullet/Speedway Toyota.

“I didn’t think there’d be any way we could get back to the front after the spin,” Thorson admitted. “I just misjudged my angle into the corner and got a little too sideways and spun it out. I’m just so happy we could do this for Bryan (Clauson). The track smoothed out a lot throughout the night and there were a lot of guys up top, but I never felt like we needed to get up there because we were strong enough running middle to bottom. We’ve all been itching to race this week, but it was worth the wait for this. We parked it for Bryan.”

Despite Bayston’s final lap heartbreak, the Lebanon, Indiana driver was able to extend his series point lead to 55 over Boat and 65 over Bacon after both encountered misfortune at Lanco, recording a second-place run in his Keith Kunz – Curb-Agajanian Motorsports/TRD – Mobil 1/Bullet/Speedway Toyota.

“I never felt like I was good enough to really be in the lead; it just fell into our hands,” Bayston acknowledged. “But, I still hate to let it slip away at the end. Tanner was really good, but this was elbows up tonight. I just feel bad. Second is okay, but I want to win and when it’s right there in front of you and you don’t deliver, it’s pretty frustrating. Regardless, we’re glad to put on a show for Bryan. We know he’s cheering us on from heaven.”

Collinsville, Oklahoma’s Tyler Thomas could finally breathe a sigh of relief after his long, strange trip to “Pennsylvania Midget Week” had him stuck in Dayton, Ohio for the previous two days with mechanical issues on their motorhome, making it just in time to Lanco to take third after starting 11th in his Tyler Thomas Motorsports/BT Machine – AirGroup/Spike/Esslinger.

“It’s been a rough start to our week with motorhome problems getting out here, but we had a great car tonight,” said a relieved Thomas. “The track was awesome and gave us a multi-groove surface we could race on. Tanner (Thorson) went by me like I was standing still, so it was impressive. One of these days, it’ll be us in victory lane, but we’re putting together some good runs here lately, and the more we’re up there, the better chance we’ll have to grab one.”

Contingency award winners at Lanco’s Clyde Martin Memorial Speedway included Carson Macedo (ProSource Fast Qualifier), Chad Boat (Simpson Race Products First Heat Race winner), Gage Walker (Competition Suspension, Inc. (CSI) Second Heat Race winner), Brady Bacon (Benic Enterprises Third Heat Race winner & Wilwood Brakes 13th Place Finisher), Holly Shelton (Indy Race Parts Semi-Feature winner) and Brenden Bright (KSE Racing Products Hard Charger).

NAPA AUTO PARTS & PIONEER POLE BUILDINGS PRESENT ALL STAR INVASION THURSDAY NIGHT AT GRANDVIEW SPEEDWAY. . . . .

KEMENAH, BLANEY, HAUDENSCHILD LEAD ALL STAR ASSAULT; HODNETT, DIETRICH, AND SMITH DEFEND HOME TURF

BECHTELSVILLE, PA (AUGUST 17, 2016) – Excitement builds as Tony Stewart’s Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions prepare to descend upon the third-mile bullring of Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, PA. NAPA Auto Parts Thunder on the Hill Racing Series brings the All Stars to the Berks County dirt track this Thursday, August 18, as the nationally touring 410 Sprint Car racing series battles the Pennsylvania Posse, with a $5,000 payday on the line. This popular event is being presented by Pioneer Pole Buildings.

A full program of 410 racing action including Time Trials, Qualifying Heat Races, a Dash to determine the A-Main starting order, and a 35-lap main event paying $5,000 to the winner, $1,000 to the 10th place finisher, and $500 to start rounds out the thrilling evening.

A quick time bonus of $100 will be awarded to the fastest competitor in Time Trials. 358/360 Sprint Car drivers are eligible to participate with $200 going to the highest finisher and $100 going to the second highest finisher.

Findlay, OH’s Chad Kemenah – the current series point leader and 4-time Series Champion — will lead the All Stars into Grandview Speedway. Piloting the beautiful No. 10H machine, Kemenah proves to be consistent scoring 19 top-5 finishes in 30 races with just a single win throughout the 2016 season. Kemenah is a previous Thunder on the Hill Racing Series winner, claiming a victory in 1999.

Defending All Star series champion Dale Blaney sits second in the chase for the championship with six wins this season – more than any driver on the tour. Blaney is trailed by 22-year-old third generation driver Sheldon Haudenschild, aboard the No. 93 machine. Haudenschild has claimed five victories in 2016 in 26 feature events.

While the All Stars bring an elite group of drivers from the mid-west, a battalion of Central Pennsylvania’s top stars are prepared to defend their home turf – and when the greatest Sprint Car drivers in the world do battle it is sure to be unpredictable.

Thomasville, PA’s Greg Hodnett is a 9-time winner at Grandview Speedway – including a 410 Sprint Car victory earlier this season. Hodnett is an easy favorite heading into this Thursday’s event, having claimed five the past seven races on ‘the Hill.’

PA Posse fans can rest assured a strong contingent of drivers are defending the Commonwealth including previous All Star Winner Danny Dietrich, Ryan Smith and Brent Marks.

In their only Pennsylvania appearances, surprise entrants to this Thursday’s All Star event at Grandview include 20-time Outlaw Champion Steve Kinser aboard the No. 11, 3-time Outlaw Champion Sammy Swindell steering the CJB Motorsports No. 1 machine, and 4-time All Star Champion Kenny Jacobs piloting his son Lee Jacobs’ No. 81 machine.

The winged action doesn’t stop there as competitors from New Jersey and Pennsylvania’s 305 Sprint Car division – namely the Tri-State Racesaver Series – also take to Grandview Speedway. A fan-favorite among area race fans the TSRS Sprint Cars always put on a thrilling event on the third-mile. While many would pick 4-time Series Champion Mike Haggenbottom as a favorite heading into the 25-lap main event, it’s Aston, PA’s Dave Brown who has claimed the past three Grandview TSRS victories

Previous All Star winners at Grandview include Cris Eash (2000), Jeff Sheppard (1999), Fred Rahmer (1999), Billy Pauch (May 1998, August 1998), Donnie Kreitz (1997, 1986), Jimmy Horton (1982), and Steve Smith Sr. (1982).

The 410 Sprint Car competitors chase a $5,000 winner’s share for 35 laps of action on the famed 1/3 mile Grandview Speedway. The tenth position pays $1,000 with $500 to start the A-Main. A $100 Quick Time bonus is up for grabs, along with a $200 bonus to the first 360/358 Sprint Car and a $100 bonus to the second 360/358 Sprint Car.

Also on the card is the TSRS Sprint Car Series, competing in a 25 lap feature event.
